More Brocade Switch Tips

In a previous blog, we discussed a couple of useful configuration tips that were apparently pretty popular. So, I’m going to share a couple more useful tips for my fellow field engineers that are new to Brocade IOS. These configuration tips are taken from known working configurations on the ICX Platform.

Enabling Layer-3 Functionality:

Out of the box, the ICX 6450 switches need a minor tweak to activate the Layer-3 switching functionality. To enable the “magic” of Layer-3 route capabilities, you need to the following:

1) Power up the switch and connect via the console port.

2) At prompt switch # Enter “config t” (no quotes, these are just to identify commands) to enter the global configuration mode.

3) Next, you should be in configuration mode at switch (config)# boot system flash secondary

4) Type “exit”, then “wr mem” to save the config and then perform “reload”.

5) On the reboot, the switch will boot off the secondary flash partition with the Layer-3 routing functionality.

6) Note, depending on the routing license you purchased, additional steps may be need to unlock more advanced routing code, such as Multicasting and BGP.

How to enable Dual-Mode:

In Brocade IOS, the dual-mode command provides switch port tagging between two VLANs. This is very important for those VoIP deployments. Dual mode isolates the native data VLAN. We’re going to assume you’ve already built your Data and Voice VLANs (100 and 101 respectively) and enabled proper tagging under each VLAN for this configuration tip:

1) Enter the global configuration mode via ‘config t’.

2) Next, enter the interface or interface range you seek to add the dual mode functionality:

Switch (config)# int e 1/1/1

Switch (config-if-e1000-1/1/1)# dual-mode 100

Switch (config-if-e1000-1/1/1)# voice-vlan 101

In this example, you’ve told the Brocade Switch that the device plugged into port e 1/1/1 is on data VLAN 100 and to expect tagged traffic from 101, which is our expected voice-vlan. This is akin to Cisco’s commands of switch port mode access versus switch port voice.
